Are there any substitutes for sake that an 18-year-old could buy?
I got a wonderful book of Japanese recipes for Christmas, but the majority of the recipes call for sake. Since I’m only 18, I can’t really go out and buy sake. Could you just use cooking sherry or something like that? Or can you even buy that at 18?
For all intentional purposes, I could just ask my mom to buy some for me. But I thought I’d check my options first.

You could try getting cooking wine from your local supermarket, most Asian markets have it. I am not sure about American ones. However, I think for best taste, sake would be better. Your best bet would probably be to ask your mom to buy you sake.
